Winding Directions
The label winding refers to the way that your labels are oriented on the roll when you unwind it, and is an important consideration when developing a label solution.
What is a label winding direction?
Our labels are supplied on a liner, and wound into rolls. The rolls can be wound in two ways:
- Wound Out- where the label is facing the outside of the roll and the liner is on the inside. The labels are visible when the roll is wound up.
- Wound In- where the label is facing the inside of the roll and the liner is on the outside of the roll. You can only see the labels when you start to unwind the roll.
There are then four directions the label can be oriented in:
- Head Leading is when the top of the label comes off the roll first
- Tail Leading has the bottom edge coming off first
- Right Edge Leading has the right edge of the label coming off the roll first
- Left Edge Leading has the left edge coming off first
Why is label winding important?
It is important to choose the correct winding direction, particularly if you are having your labels applied automatically or if they are going through a thermal printer. Your machine will specify the winding direction required, or if contract packing check with your provider.
If you are applying labels by hand, but may want to have them machine applied in the future it is best to set them up for this from the start.
